Lane was uninjured. Lane, an independent trucker, was delivering sections of the Post-Dispatch to the paper's plant in Maryland Heights. St. Louis County police say Topolski and Lane were wearing seatlbelts but that the woman who died wasn't. One woman was killed and another Critically injured when their car apparently ran a red flashing light and was hit broadside by a truck early Thursday, authorities said.

The jury had considered the death penalty, but one juror refused, citing Anderson's history of mental problems. The victims, Jolaine R. Lanman, 34, and her son Kenneth, 3, were bludgeoned and stabbed to death at their home, east of Belleville. Anderson apparently picked them at random in a scheme to frame three former bosses he blamed for his being fired by the Illinois Department of Public Aid a year earlier. An Illinois court of appeals upheld on Thursday Djile R.

Isolati ion side of the American political stage. From there, it sniped at the American military presence around the world but never budged it. And then, without warning, the Soviet Union fell apart.

True, Saddam Hussein posed a clear and present, but relatively brief, danger to American oil supplies. After his moment passed, Americans experienced a sensation unknown to the nation since Hitler's armies invaded Poland in 1939: a world with no genuine outside threat. Such a threat had kept the isolationists at bay for half a century. But now, the United States seems as unassailable as it did in 1838, when Abraham Lincoln said: "All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in the course of a thousand years." From page one No matter what, the United States must stay out of war. Those beliefs have long since faded.

Almost all Americans accept entanglements in such multinational groupings as NATO and the United Nations. As for war well, when Iran snatched Kuwait, Americans voted with yellow ribbons to take it back. It's obvious now that the clear and present danger known as the Soviet Union kept isolationism tucked away in the postwar years. For a few years, the debate over joining NATO and the frustration of the Korean War seemed to breathe a bit of life into the movement, especially among conservative Republicans. But the election of the internationally minded Dwight D.

Eisenhower in 1954 cost isolationism whatever mainstream status it had once enjoyed. The movement retreated to the far left OBITUARIES John L. Davidson Longtime Lawyer Washington but decided to stay in St. Louis and went into private practice. He continued in his practice until his death.
