OBITUARIES FUNERAL NOTICES Charles Sherman, 82; Retired Post-Dispatch Reporter, Editor Charles Sherman, a retired writer and news copy editor at the PostDispatch, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 1995) at his home in Ocala, after suffering from a heart ailment. He was 82. Mr.

Sherman was in the newspaper business in St. Louis for 42 years. He began his career as a reporter at the old Globe-Democrat. He was an Sherman assistant editor at the Globe before he joined the Post-Dispatch in 1956. During a 22-year career at the Post, he was a writer for what is now the St.

Louis Post-Dispatch Magazine, a restaurant critic for the Everyday section and a news copy editor. He retired in 1978 and moved to Florida a year later. In the early 1960s, he was president of the St. Louis Newspaper Guild. Mr.

Sherman was born in Hartford, Conn. He graduated in 1936 from the University of Missouri at Columbia and served in the Army in World War II. No funeral service will be held. The body will be cremated. Among the survivors are his wife, Bernice Sherman of Ocala; a daughter, Suzanne Aboulfadl of Missoula, a sister, Grace Santoro of West Hartford, and a granddaughter.

Parke Thompson II; Founded 2 Manufacturing Companies Parke Thompson II died Oct. 5, 1995, of infirmities at Olympic Memorial Hospital in Port Angeles, Wash. He was 88. Mr. Thompson was founder and president of Parke Thompson Associates, formerly of Fenton.

A native of Millville, N.J., he settled in St. Louis in 1934 'worked as the chief engineer at Alco Valve Co. here. After leaving Alco, Mr. Thompson and two area businessmen formed AMP Corp.

for the design and manufacture of carbonation equipment and beverage dispensers. During World War II, the company made mechanical fuses for munitions. After the war, he started Parke Thompson Associates to produce civilian products, but he resumed making fuses for the Korean War. Later, he sold the firm to Atlas Powder Co. In the late 1950s, Mr.

Thompson and his son, Parke Thompson Jr. of Concord Village, formed a second Parke Thompson Associates, which specialized in the design and manufacture of tools and materials for the electric utility industry. That firm was sold in 1979 to the A.B. Chance division of Emerson Electric Co. He was married for nearly 50 years to Margaret Lawton Thompson.

She died in 1976. He later married Elsie Greene Thompson. She died in 1984. No services are planned. His body was cremated.

In addition to his son, survivors include two daughters, Patricia Bliss and Sandra Thompson, both of Long Beach, six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Sister Mary Alicia Dalton, 81; Was College Dean, President Sister Mary Alicia Dalton, a former teacher, dean and college president, died Saturday (Oct. 7, 1995) at the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood Motherhouse in O'Fallon, after a long illness. She was 81. Sister Dalton was born in St.

Louis. She earned a bachelor's degree from Quincy University in Quincy, and a master's degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. She entered the order of the Sisters of the Most Dalton Precious Blood in 1931 and professed her final vows in 1937. She began teaching elementary school in 1934 in Conception, Mo. From 1962 to 1971, she was a dean, president and English instructor at the old St.

Mary's College in O'Fallon. From 1971 to 1991, she lectured at high schools and colleges and at corrections institutions. She also served as a secretary of the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood and as a chaplain at the O'Fallon Police Department. She retired in 1991. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m.

Saturday in the chapel at Sisters of the Most Precious Blood Motherhouse, 204 North Main Street, O'Fallon. An evening prayer of thanksgiving will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Motherhouse. The body was donated to St. Louis University School of Medicine.

There are no immediate survivors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood, 204 North Main Street, O'Fallon, Mo. 63366-2299. DEATHS ELSEWHERE 'ROBERT H. FINCH, 70, who managed Richard M.

Nixon's 1960 presidential campaign and later served as his secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, died after a heart attack Tuesday (Oct. 10, 1995) in Pasadena, Calif. After managing Nixon's unsuccessful 1960 presidential campaign, Mr. Finch served from 1967 to 1969 as lieutenant governor of California and then became HEW secretary in Nixon's first Cabinet in 1969. Goodfellow and his colleagues studied a family in which pancreatic and oral cancer and malignant melanoma ran rampant. Analyzing blood samples, they found that family members who got the cancers had a particular mutation in the p16 gene. Those who did not get cancer did not carry the mutation. The scientists determined that the mutation plays a role in initiating the cancers. Understanding the chemistry of these events should lead to better cancer treatments, they said.
