PURSUED DIT POLICE HITS CO OTHER CARS A speeding automobile being chased by police struck six other cars in the 3600 block 4 of Lafayette avenue early today, overturning one and injuring the driver. Police captured two men after they abandoned their automobile and fled on foot. The chase began at Jefferson and Lafayette avenues. Sgt. Earl Halveland, on his way to a reported peace disturbance at the intersection, saw the car being driven west in Lafayette at 70 miles an hour.

With Halveland close behind, the driver attempted to pass another westbound automobile in the narrow 3600 block of Lafayette. The other vehicle turned over. The driver, George Bohigian, 23 years old, 4200 Lafayette, suffered contusions and abrasions of the right hand and left hip. The speeding car swerved back and forth across the street after the collision, sideswiping two parked cars on one side and three on the other. The driver finally straightened out and got away because Halveland was blocked off by the overturned machine.

However, Patrolman Adolph Kuestler, who had been alerted by radio, took up the chase. The pursued car was abandoned in a blind alley near Lafayette and Tower Grove avenue. Kuestler fired three shots in the air, but the driver and a companion got away. Other police made a search and arrested the two men. They identified themselves as Larry Gene Griffin, 20, of the 2900 block of Virginia avenue, and Warren Winstead, 21, of the 1700 block of South Ninth street.

Griffin, the driver, said he fled CHEMICAL AWARD TO GO TO CHARLES ALLEN THOMAS Special to the Post- -Dispatch. NEW YORK, Feb. 27-Charles Allen Thomas, chairman of the board of Monsanto Chemical has been selected by the American Section of the Societe de Chimie Industrielle to receive its International Palladium Medal, it was announced today. "Dr. Thomas's dedicated and untiring efforts to promote the development of peaceful uses of atomic energy in a time of world crisis have resulted in better international understanding and friendship among the free nations of the world," said Henry B. Hass, president of the American section. RAILROAD YARDMASTER KILLED IN ACCIDENT Charles W. Bender, Frisco yardmaster, died last night at Frisco Hospital three hours after being injured in an accident in the railroad yards near Theresa avenue.

Kenneth Barnicle of Ellisville, an engineer, told police that Bender fell attempting to mount the footboard of an engine. Wheels of a caboose being switched by the engine ran over him, severing both legs. Bender, 48 years old, lived at 6 Barnstable court, Brentwood. 27 (AP)-An 18-year-old college student found dead in this eastern Pennsylvania town last Thursday apparently died after sniffing the fumes from airplane glue, the office of the deputy Bucks county coroner said last night. A spokesman for the office of Dr. Charles V. Kachel said the death John Ponce Fenley resulted accidental front suffocation. The spokesman said the youth placed the glue, containing the chemical trichloethelene, in a plastic bag and it acted to close his windpipe.

Fenley was found mother, Ethel, in the family's home i in Kintnersville. The youth had just completed his first semester at Xavier College in Ohio, but had withdrawn from the school and was planning to attend the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. UNION REJECTS LEAD FIRM'S OFFER, CONTINUES STRIKE Members of United Steelworkers Local 6242 rejected yesterday a contract proposal from St. Joseph Lead Co. and voted to continue their sevenmonth strike against the company's mines in southeast Missouri.

Robert McVay, international union representative, said that the company's latest offer calling for a 96-cent-a-day wage boost and other improvements was rejected unanimously. He said that 450 of the 1500 strikers attended the meeting. Federal mediators met again today with union and company representatives.
