ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH FRIDAY. DECEMBER 21, 1990 iPotOSi VirUS: Mosquitoes New To Missouri Could Be Villains, Scientists Say By William Allen Of tht Post-Dispatch Staff The Asian tiger mosquito now lies dormant in Missouri and Illinois, but its bite has just become a litUe more dangerous. I In today's issue of Science magazine, researchers report that Asian tiger mosquitoes collected last year near Potosi, carried a previously unknown virus. They named it the Potosi virus.

One co-author of the report, George Craig called the finding "a distant early warning." Craig is a medical entomologist at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. "The significance here is not so much the Potosi virus, but that the Asian tiger mosquito can transmit viruses in first found in the United States nnlv fiv VParc a on In The next question researchers need to address is whether the Potosi virus will infect humans, they said. The virus is related to about five others found in U.S. mosquitoes that generally feed only on animals. None of the five has been shown to be a human health problem.

But the scientists raised the possibility that the Asian tiger mosquito, because it aggressively feeds on humans, could spread Potosi and other viruses to humans. "But that's a reasonably remote possibility," Francy said. The Asian tiger mosquito was first found in the St Louis region in 1986. Scientists say dry summers and harsh winters kept it from multiplying much in its first years in the region. nature," Craig said Thursday in a telephone interview.

The mosquito bad been shown in laboratory studies to be capable of transmitting disease. The mosquito is a deadly scourge in its native Asia. Another co-author, Bruce Francy, said the finding was not cause for alarm but demonstrated the need to continue monitoring the tiger mosquito and its interaction with infectious diseases. Francy is an epidemiologist with the federal Centers for Disease Control in Fort Collins, Colo. So far, no cases of human illness have been linked to the mosquito, he said.

The tiger mosquito, an aggressive biter of humans, was Houston in a shipment of used tires from Japan. It rapidly spread and now is reported in 18 states, including Missouri and Illinois. Because the mosquito is known to spread deadly viruses in Asia, scientists are concerned that it could become a major villain in the United States. They are especially worried that it could become much more efficient than native species at spreading La Crosse and St. Louis encephalitis, dog heartworm and other diseases.

To find the virus, researchers collected 14,000 mosquitoes last year at various sites in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Tests revealed that only those from Potosi carried a detectable disease. 4C Mid-East Area Agency on Aging To Lose High-Risk Designation By Theresa Tighe and Jefferson, Franklin and St. Av 1 City Backs Higher Pay For Janitors Mid-East doesn't continue to make progress they will be placed back on high-risk status," he said. Walker said that board members must continue to be involved in the agency's operations and that the agency must design and put in place a new financial management system.

Richards said Mid-East would comply with the state's conditions. He said hard work by the staff and the board had led to the removal of the designation. Mid-East has been on probation since 1988, when the state alleged that some former board members and officers had taken kickbacks, unauthorized salaries and Improper fringe benefits. The state has made no such charges against the current board and administration. But state officials had said the agency was poorly managed and had inadequate financial procedures.

Charles counties. The director of the Missouri Divi-sion of Aging, Edwin Walker, said he phoned Mid-East's board president, Floyd Richards, on Wednesday to tell him the good news. An official letter will be sent sometime next week. Walker said, "This recognizes that Mid-East has been making improvements." But Walker also said Mid-East's new status is conditional. "If Of the Post-Dispatch Staff State officials say they will remove on Jan.

1 the high-risk designation of the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging because the agency's management has improved. The high-risk designation meant that the agency stood to lose the $6 million in state and federal contracts through which it provides services to 25,000 older people in St. Louis County FUNERAL NOTICES By Philip Dine Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Beginning today, hundreds of janitors in the area will get higher pay as a result of a "justice for janitors" ordinance adopted by city officials. The Board of Alderman passed the ordinance Tuesday, and Mayor Vincent C. Schoemehl Jr.

signed it Thursday. The city will no longer enter into contracts concerning city property with employers who don't pay janitors and custodians at least the prevailing wage set by the federal government. The ordinance affects contractors doing business directly with the city and those who lease buildings from the city. The U.S. Department of Labor has set the prevailing wage for janitors in St.

Louis at $5.49, plus fringe benefits. Many now get the minimum wage of $3.80, said William Stodghill, president of Local 50 of the Service Employees International Union. Local 50, which represents 10,000 workers in Missouri and Southern Illinois, spon- William Stodghill Employees union president sored the ordinance. "This is significant because it is, to my knowledge, the first time any city has entered into this kind of concept about the prevailing wage," Stodghill said. Schoemehl said: "This is an issue of basic economic equality.

I was very pleased that the city of St. Louis could lead the way on this issue." Among the property affected by the ordinance is Lambert Field, City Hall and Regional Hospital, Stodghill said. Member of Salem Church. Memori By David Aguillard Post-Dispatch Jefferson City Bureau FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. In front of the altar sat three Army flight helmets, their dark visors down. In front of the helmets stood 200 soldiers. Although death had brought them together, they listened to recollections of the lives of three friends.

They were there for a memorial service honoring three Missouri National Guard members killed when their helicopter crashed in Texas one week ago. The three "represented the best" of the Guard, their company commander said. Killed were 1st Lt. Peter J. Rose, 26, of Lincoln, Chief Warrant Officer Carol L.

McKinney, 36, of Leslie, and Staff Sgt. Dallas R. Cooper, 35, of Russellville, Mo. The three died Friday night when their helicopter crashed north of Houston. The aircraft was one of 12 from the 1267th Medical Company, an air ambulance unit called into active duty for deployment in the Persian Gulf.

The company, based in Jefferson City, was formed Oct. 1 from units in Missouri and Nebraska. The commander, Maj. Karl Poul-sen, said he met Rose only recently. Rose, a horse rancher from Lincoln, "brought with him the enthusiasm of youth that was really so precious." Poulsen recalled reviewing records of the Guard members from Nebraska with Rose.

It was evident, he said, that Rose cared greatly about everyone in his unit. McKinney was a "quiet professional with a great deal of zest for her mission," Poulsen said. "Every time you met Carol, or saw her, you knew that she was a class person." McKinney, a native of St. Louis, joined the 1267th in March after serving in the Army for seven years. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1972 and worked for Southwestern Bell in St.

Louis for 10 years. She joined the National Guard in 1979, moving to the Army in 1983 "to learn to fly whirlybirds," said her mother, Erma McKinney. When Poulsen spoke of Cooper, his voice cracked. Cooper had been a mechanic at the Missouri National Guard Army Aviation Support Facility in Jefferson City "forever," Poulsen said. Cooper "was one of those cornerstones on which the National Guard is built," Poulsen said.

He remembered Cooper for his dry wit and for volunteering for active duty in the Persian Gulf, saying "everybody has to be somewhere." Cooper's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Life Assembly of God Church in Barnett, Mo. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Rocky Mount, Mo. The funeral for McKinney will be at 11 a.m. today in Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Mo.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Rose was buried Thursday in Lincoln. TOCKSTEIN, GEORGE baptized into the hope of Christ Resurrection, Dec.
