Todd Akin, R-Town and Country, narrowly defeated former St. Louis County Executive Gene McNary on Tuesday for the GOP nomination in the 2nd Congressional District, according to final unofficial returns.

The five-way Republican race in the suburban district being left by U.S. Rep. Jim Talent, R-Chester-field, was one of the most contentious congressional primary battles in the state. Moments before the final vote totals trickled in, McNary said he would probably seek a recount. The margin of victory was a mere 56 votes.

In the other open St. Louis area congressional seat the 1st District state Sen. William Lacy Clay Jr. defeated St. Louis County Councilman Charlie Dooley and three others in the Democratic primary.

The victory means he will almost assuredly succeed his father, Rep. William Clay, D-St. Louis, who is retiring this year, because the district is a Democratic stronghold. The 2nd District lead changed hands several times throughout the day as results trickled in. The district takes in much of west St.

Louis County and about half of St. Charles County. Akin, known for his opposition to abortion and gambling, said he had to overcome McNary's 4-to-l advantage in name recognition when the campaign began. Akin credited his "courage to lead" message for making up the gap. "The horses that were in the race didn't all start at the same point," Akin, 53, said before the final results were known.

See Officer, A4 ft CAMPAIGN 2000 PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT faith and values, the new Democratic ticket made clear that they aim to make a fresh start after they are formally nominated for their positions at the Democratic National Convention next week in Los Angeles. Gore recalled that the last time the Democrats had their national convention in Los Angeles, they nominated John F. Kennedy, who went on to become the only Roman Catholic president. Tuesday's talk of diversity, values and faith reflected the Democrats' determination to undercut Republican nominee George W. Bush's inroads with minority voters and the Republicans' attempt to shackle Gore to President Bill Clinton and talk of scandal.

Lieberman, a two-term senator from Connecticut, was the first member of either party to speak SIS "This is our national championship" By Tom Timmermann Of the Post-Dispatch You don't have to tell Stephen Dyreks that the past 12 months have been good ones for St. Louis sports fans. We GOT AAA out on the Senate floor against Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, branding it "immoral." On Tuesday, he acted as character witness for Gore. "He has never never wavered in his responsibilities as a father, as a husband, and, yes, as a servant of God," Lieberman said. The two men and their wives, hands linked, took the stage to a charging musical beat. "We must work, and we will work Al and Tipper, Hadassah and I to help renew the moral center of this nation so that families can be stronger, children safer and parents empowered to pass to their children their faith and their moral values," Lieberman said. His words echoed those of his September 1998 speech accusing Clinton of making it harder for parents to instruct children on values and acceptable behavior.

Speaking at a rally, the vice president said he was demonstrating his belief that the United States is one country whose varied people share a common destiny. Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew, thanked Gore for having "the courage and character" to do so.
