SHMHTUS ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH THURSDAY, JULY 18, 1974 SECTilON MM 11 11 1 OGGQD 11 11 1 11 11 11 1 11 11 11 1 jl 1 14'- -4 7 Mr A Cimicv ik A Sleepeir Sob Gibson delivers strikeout Pitch No. 3000. 1 I 'tJrjG9G0G)Q1r TIPIS By Neal Russo Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Why did Sparky Anderson defy the baseball book by putting the potential winning run on base in the twelfth inning last night? The Cincinnati Reds manager said he wanted to make sure he'd sleep after are game at Busch Stadium, where the Cardinals' Bob Gibson made history with his 3000th strikeout. "I wouldn't have slept if we didn't walk Lou Brock and he beat us," Anderson said.

"He's beaten our club a lot in the last few years, at least three times with home runs. If Mike Tyson had beaten us, I would have slept." Tyson didn't beat the Reds after Anderson ordered a bases-filling walk to Brock with two out in the twelfth. He popped out and the rampaging Reds had a 6-4 victory over the fading Cardinals. The loss was the Redbirds' fifth in a row and their eleventh in 12 games. They are hanging around in third place, still two games from the top, in the mixed-up National League Eastern Division.

Meanwhile, in the NL West, the second-place Reds have crept within 5 games of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who led by lO'i games just eight days ago. George Foster shattered the Busch Stadium tie last night with a two-run double off Orlando Pena just after Pena entered the game. Rich Folkers, the losing pitcher, made his big mistake when he walked light-hitting Darell Chaney with one out in the twelfth. Dave Conception pushed Chaney to third base with a single and Foster sent both runners home with his double. Gibson had to struggle extra hard because of defensive problems.

His 3000th strikeout victim was Cesar Geronimo in the second inning. He swung and missed on a fastball that was high and certainly not a strike. That makes Gibson the only National Leaguer to strike out as many as 3000 batters. The only American Leaguer with that distinction is Walter Johnson, with 3508. An error by Ted Simmons, playing first base, cost a run.

Another Cincy run came after left fielder Brock lost a fly ball in the twilight zone and it fell for a double. So, manager Red Schoendienst, after one game of risking defense in hopes of generating offense, has swung the other way. He said he panned to reinstate glove wizard Ken Reitz at third base tonight with Marc Hill behind the plate and Joe Torre moving back to first base from third That means Simmons, 0 for 19 and down to a .261 batting average, will be out of the suiting lineup. "We'll work him out at first base," Schoendienst said. Said Simmons.

"I took extra batting practice just to feel what a hit looks like." The Cardinals had just five hits last night, only one in an eight-inning span. Torre celebrated his thirty-fourth birthday a few hours early with his first home run since June 12. A solemn rookie would walk past the picketing football Cardinals' veterans and be told, "We missed you today." The Rookie, always with head bowed, invariably would reply, "I hadda get some sleep." With the picket line moved yesterday afternoon from a distant street corner to the entrance of the Big Red's dormitory, the rookies and free agents finally came eyeball to win, tne striking veterans, BH7013 BA78 13 I CP.70-13 DR78-14 VV I Pmphlt on il rrm StMl Rtdial 500 The gas saver! Sloan In Camp; Buh Wants Out NORMAL, 111., July 18 -Two of the Big Red's second-year defensive linemen made news here yesterday! Dave Butz said that he would play out his option wpth the Cardinals this season, and Bonnie Sloan crossed the striking veterans' picket line and reported to training camp. Butz was the Big Red's No. 1 draft pick last year and missed the entire training camp when he failed to come to contractual terms with the Cardinals. He finally signed the night of the club's last preseason game. Both Butz and Sloan started, although Sloan was sidelined most of the time with knee injuries.

Sloan, the first deaf player perform in the National Football League, and linebacker Larry Stallings are the only Big Red veterans hi camp. Stallings, an 11-year regular, reported Sunday night. as nervous as if they were in their first National Football League game. "The pressure's on," said fookie receiver J. V.

Cain, the Big Red's No. 1 pick. Evidently, the pressure will remain on. An attorney for Illinois State University told veterans today that the university had no legal right to keep them off the campus. The veterans, led by player representative Dan Dierdorf, National Footbalf League Play-e Association attorney Dan Lindsay and Green Bay Packers center Ken Bowman, marched to their new position about 3:40 p.m.

yesterday. Joe Sullivan, the Big Red's operations director, spotted the pickets, jumped from his chair and yelled to his secretary, "Get me the security police!" One and Illinois State University's director of security arrived in about nine minutes "Cops are never around when you realty need them," Dierdorf said.
