'1 v. ujuu me wuoie presentea a beautiful appearance From the rostoflice the Government bunt ing floated, its immense folds swinging in the breeze like the wings of some protecting spirit, while the building was covered with lesser patterns of the American banner.

In the vicinity and the locality between it and the river, the decorations were general, and so profuse that it is next to impossible to describe them in detail. THE Til KONG OATIIERIXG. Eight or ten thousand people on the streets at an hour when the thoroughfares are usually deserted, created an unusual demand for. fruits, ice-cream, water, lemonades, in fact everything that would quench the thirst and allay the cravings of hunger, that fairly surprised the vendors. The street merchants by long habit or those who had gone into business for the day merely, the apple woman, the sellers oi milk, the red lemonade man, all came out early, and established themselves convenient localities, with a large supply on hand, and relays of it constantly to arrive.

Prices were not raised, but there was a disposition to make as much ouff of a little as possible, for once. The lemons got less squeezes, the peaches were culled closer, the red lemonade lost its attractive crimson, and the milk glasses wete reduced in sizev Towards noon, when the crowd began to thicken about the stands, the consciences of these vendors took their flight. and left. Jn one of the little alleyways on Fourth street, the man who shows you what you EAT IX HAM waslrcated. He had a dozen 4 'cheese skippers" which he had painted with India ink, ar.d when last seen was harranguing a crowd of professors from abroad, who were dividing heir attention between his speech and the skippers.

The feliow with the pale, melancholy moustache, who 5djows you the feat of lifting yourself, was out on the avenue, and divided the crowd with the inevitable salve man, who was expatiating with a wonderful un- tion upon the impossibility of the salve failing to uo wiiai lie said it would. The Fourth of July was upon everybody's face except the young man's who had COMMKXCEI HIS OX THE THriI and had had twenty-four hours in which to get Fourth of July drunk. There wasn't much of the real Fourth in him, none of that vim and energy, the pamp and pride of life, wbich is supposed to assume owav ia the American breast on such a day. He hung t-'U. about as limber, in a don't-care-sort of a way as one could imagine, ar.d took no iu-tertst in Jbanners, Hags, gorgeous nay, 0r anything else." Now aril then when the crowd would burst out in a wild he would head, sputter out a kind of hurrah, but it lacked spirit, and faded rapidly into his shirt bosom as soon as his head drooped.

f.vki:y cor.XEK had its features. Here it was the man who sits out with the last dozen of lpa.1 nom.ii. in his paw, blind for the occasion over there cigars, tnree for five cents, strong enough to vank a metal statue's stomach out of shape; and down here store of lazzaroni pursuing bf as a professional business. Nobody supposed for an instant that the umbrella all day, just as anxious, seemingly, for ten cents as though it was the fourteenth of Juiy. And the streets are full of arjitls, with white aprons, soft, downy wings, flowing hair, loose robes, bare arms, dimpled cheeks, and of course clean faees.

They are here, thousands of them, hanging lovingiy on the strous arms of Dick, Tom, Jerry, or plain Sam, seeing the sights. AU TES. The following salutes were fired during the mornirg: the Simpson battery, JIaior Fuchs commanding, from the levee near the brii'ge, at daylight thirteen guns; at half-past nine o'clock one hundred gnns; fifty from each side of the river alternately, commencing on the Missouri side. At daylight Gen. Grierson fired a Federal salute, and at eight o'clock a national salute from the Arsenal grounds.

At noon thirty-seven gua were fired by the I'nited States ordnance detachment from Jefferson barracks under the dire-lion of Captain L. Babbitt, I S. A. WHAT THE RAILROADS III. The Cairo short line brought in foar extra trains, accommodating about 1.000 of hich about si)0 are from Carroirtoo and oints along the road.
