Dr. John Young Brown and the lest of the staff of City Hospital physicians are laughing today at the army surgeon who. according to Washington dispatches, has "discovered" a new use for the superfluous and troublesome vermiform appendix. The Washington dispatches say that the army physician has "discovered" that the appendix. by being surgically expelled through aperture in the abdomen, can be successfully used as a "funnel" through which medicines may be introduced into the lower bowels for the purpose of cleansing and healing them.

The process is described as being valuable chiefly in cases of acute dysentery, which frequently is found in soldiers returning from the Fhilippines. "There is no question of the value of the treatment," said Dr. Brown today. "We have been trying it at the City Hospital, and surgeons throughout the city have been using it in their private practice, for some time. We have always secured excellent results.

The treatment cannot be called 'new," it lias been known and emiJoyed for several years. It is merely the utilization of the verlform appendix for making a colostomy through which the colon can be washed out." Dr. A. V. L.

Brokaw discussed the treatment in similar manner. "I have not had occasion to use it in my private practice," he said, "but It has been employed at the City Hospital with success. The treatment cannot be. tilled "old," as was only made possible by progress of modern surgery, but it is not a novelty. It has proved successful.

The treatment maybe described bs a means of washing out the lower bowels from above, downward, without employing the stomach as a medium, rather than from below upward. Dr. U. Wiley Broome said treatment could not always be employed, for the reason that the appendix was frequently closed. "That was the case with the appendix of Charles Kratz.

which I recently removed, he said. "The part was strictured. and the lower portion was closed and filled with poisonous matter. It would have been the case with three other appendices In the process described. The same has been the case with three other appendices which I have recently removed." Edwin C.

Fourth and LACE ALL NEW WHICH IS EXQUISITE NETS AND 250 We have taken soiled from that we can Laii Martin, once a sailor, is now conducting a remarkable religious revival in "The Bantam Saloon." run by former pugilist Danny Daly and famous as the-resort of fighting men and general all round sports. The saloon is at Seventh and Market streets and every Saturday night now it echoes to the fervid cxortatlons of Kvangt-list Martin and the Tiymn-singing of the 15 men and women of the "Star of Hope" mission at 212 Soutli Fourth street, who assist Martin in his religious services.

The revival was planned four weeks ago when Martin visited Daly. "Will you let me conduct religious services in your saloon?" he aked the astonished proprietor of "The Uantani." "My work is that of saving souls, and I can reach some in this way that could bo reached in no other way: May I preach to them in your saloon?" "Sure:" replied Danny Dajy. "It will do me no harm and it may do them good. ahead'." And Dan Martin, ex-sailor, -went ahead. Every Saturday night at 11 o'clock he; and his band of helpers march to "The Bantam" saloon and virtually take possession of It.

They occupy the "business section" of the place, the big room -wjire the bar is and where the concert and incidental drinking used to flourish most extensively. There is an electrical piano there, but its ragtime melodies are silent on Saturday nights, supplanted by the chanting of lie Band of Hope singers. Astonishing to relate, when it is remom-b--d what class, of men frequent the drinking places in that neighborhood, the revival services conducted by former Sailor WOMEN FLUTTER AT ELEVEN JUDGES 'What, Are They to Hear Our Divorce Suits," Said Eleven Nervous Applicants. Fifty women and half as many men crowded as divorce case principals and witnesses into Judge Ryan's courtroom Monday morning at the 'beginning of his "default day" cases. There were IS default divorce cases on the docket.

Evangelist Martin is an eloquent preacher in his rough-and-ready way. He is splendidly in earnest and talks to the men in Danny Daly's "Bantam" saloon straight from the shoulder, as they express it. Not Infrequently he moves his hearers to tears, presenting a strange spectacle in a drinking resort favored by a class that prides itself on its "hardness." But Sailor Martin knows how to reach the spiritual sida of this class, beneath all its hardness. Eight souls have alreadv been converted Three conversions, were made last Saturday night, breaking the record of the meetings to date. Men and women alike surrender to the emotional oratory of the old Jack-tar.

The smell of liquor is In the air and the walls of the room in which the preacher holds fortli are decorated with flashy "sporting pictures, but religious influence seems to dominate the scene when the sturdy mariner preaches. Hi.s services generally last from 45 minutes to an hour and the average nightly attendance has been crowding the saloon to the very doors "There hasn't been a. drunkejri man present at one of the meetings," savs Dannv Daly, proprietor of "The Bantam." "Of course. 1 sell drinks to any man that wants a drink, if he ain't aJready drunk, and there's a lively trade after theso meetings are over, but there ain't no 'drunks' nor disorderly hoodlums at the meetings. I reckon they're doing good." Evangelist Martin believes that Ms revival is saving the souls of many of Danny Daly's patrons.

He is grea.tly encouraged and his fervor as a preacher of the. Word increases with each successive Saturday night. Evangelist Martin is a stalwart Irishman, six for.t in height and built like a gladiator. He likes a dash of red in his costume and is a picturesque f.gnre.
