J. BAHTHOLOW, Preatdent WM J. LEWIS'. Vic PreatdeLt. The Railroad Strikers Left Out in the Cold- Trouble Among the Coal Braidivootl.

Miners at (Special to tli St. Louis DUpatoh.) Chicago, 111., June 4. -The strike of the brakemen, principally those attached to the freight trains, continues on the Chicago and Alton railroad. The places of the strikers, however, are being rapidly filled, and the new men submit to the reduction of five aud ten do'dirs a mouth making the wages $40 and Thus far there has been no delay in trains and the liuil time in freights favors the company. A committee of coal miners representing the strikers at Uraidwood are in the city, and to-day called at the office of President Walker of the Chicago, Buriingtou and uincy railroad to try atid induce him not to insist ou a reduction of their wages.

They represent about sixteen hundred men who have quit work. Walker is tut of the city aud hence the misidon is fruitless. liKIGUT ON TEMPKICANC'i: He I'evelnpeii h's Views to the Friend of Temperance He Favors Moderation. Nfw Yokk, June 4. Ata recent meeting of the friends of temperance in London, John made a speech in which lie said the friends asked for things to be done at parliament which they know aud aii know, at the present lime, ith the preseutstatcof public opinion, were impossible to be done, and if parliament were to pass laws as those proposed by many ot the friends of temperance legislation, that the cry next week they would have to repeal them, anil the whole city of London would be in riot, revolt aud insurrection.

Against public opinion parliament could have no more pwer than the meanest citizen. He believed it would never be touched unless thoughtful, serious men, beginning with the ministers of the Gospel, and all tho-e ho went to places of woiship for other re-ons than fashion. The question of intemperance is one of the great evils they have to overcome. He had come to the opinion that unless the religious portions of the country would take up this nucstion, there was no hope for it whatever. At present, according to custom, wines must be ou our tables to ornament them, and from the staple of conversion he iliilhti had uot bought any wine or spirituous liquors whatever siuee lsi), when he took to housekeeping.

It had cost him seme inconvenience and trouble but he had had no cession to regret the step he had taken. He believed it would be an advantage which no words in our language would be at all adequate to describe. CRIMINAL The anil Itetentiou of Aoied Scoundrels On the Trail of Others. Placet and A-hmore. who await requisitions on the way from Kansas. Lieut. uiiUi aud Special Police Otheer Lnkin went from here on the lth of May with an escort of Mexican i al to arrest and overtake Hamilton, the Jersey City defaulter. They went to San Lul-2 Potosi, following "Hamilton's trail which they struck at San Kerraudo.

At San Luis they were only twelve hours behind Hamilton, but were informed by the district judge that if they attempted to 3rrest Hamilton without the approval of the warrant by the Govei nor of the State, they would be arrested themselves. This warrant he stated nnist explain crime, and Gov. Canallo of Tam-auiipas should make requisitions oa the other governors ollicers. They met many Americans traveling in Mexico. They beard of one who they learned on their return answered the description of Wm.

II. Goddard, who stole worth of I'nion Pacific railroad bonds from Birdseye, Cloyd P.ayliss' attorney in New York last year. The judge afterwards agreed that if the would pay certain amounts he would have Hamilton arrested. They could cot comply, and therefore returned. It is said that Hamilton was protected for some days by General Continea, who though not now in ollit has almost unbounded iu-ilucuce iu Matamors.

kdinisukg. The Ouestton of Precedence Settled at Last. Nkw Yokk, June 4. A London letter sas the Iuehtss of Kdiuburg's position at court has lcen settled. She is to be her Loyal Imperial, (or Imperial Koyal Highness, and is to rank next to the Princess of Wales, except when the crown Princess of Pru-sia happms to isit Ilngland.

The rule has hitherto been that the daughter of the sover-e'gn tool; precedence over the wives of the -oils, except in case of the Princess of Walts. The Duchess of Kdinburg, however, is not only royai by marriage but imperial by birth, and it is on this ground that a higher place has been assigned her. In Lussia she was, after her mother. who is an invalid aud lives in retirement, the tirst lady in the laud, and raised high above all nobility. Here she is only one among many princes-es, ami has apparently few striking qualities of her own to win commanding position.

The is deficient in dignity and style, and her sex are erne! enough to say she does uot know how to dress. However, in some other way she mav strike out for herself. CUBA. a t-lvate T.f-tter l.lvfH Im -a nt Kacts rot Heretofore Platte Btiiown. NKW lor.K, June 4.

Bristow, the new-Treasurer, has not yet taken hold of his duties, although from the generally favorable comments made by the newspapers at large, his appointment aud confirmation give general satisfaction. Poland iu getting his supplies "ready for his Arkansas trip. The investigating committee ill probably leave next Monday to see what they can do in the way of turning Arkausas over to the tender mercy of Brooks, Clayton, Horsey, and Poker Jack McCTurc. Wilshire put the case strongly to Grant the other day, however, when he said to him "Mr. President: Congress may find a pretext to remand Arkansas back into the terrible condition flora which it has just been rescued, but lit me say to you, as a Xortheru man and a Republican, that the party aul the country cannot aii'ord to let ailairs continue longer in the South like they have continued, since the war closed.

The erudition of Louisiana and South Carolina to-day i- doing more to break down the Republican party and destroy respect and allegiance to it ia th minds of the masses of the Northern people than everything else combined. Is it sensible, therefore, in the case of my State, t3 support Clayton, Horsey, and a few corrupt and men, and lose in other states the support and respect of thousands upon thousands of true and patriotic followers iu other portions of the couu-try': It is time to call a halt in this reconstruction busiuess. The people will uot and should not support a party that permits one portion of the body politic to be strong and healthy, and the oilier a hideous ulctr. taiutiug aud poisoning the whole air. We expect you to stand by" us.

Mr. President, iu this second battle we iutend to make for juti and local It is said that Grant endorsed every word Wilshire spoke, and was outspoken iu his condemnation of the whole scheme. CVKRKNCY. The currency question still remains open. There ha- becu no conference a yet between the committees of the two Houses, aud there ill uot be for several days.

The one stroug point of antagonism the retirement of new part Morton, Logan and a few other prominent Republican are upon the skeleton of a new party. Morton is the prime mover aud leader. He hopes to get tlesh on his subject in time for the fall elections. To a large extent the party will be a sectional one. It will seek to plaee prominently before the people tho-e issues in whiih the West is the most vitally interested.

One of the planks in its plat form will be a currency plank, and another a resolution endorsing local self-governmem. He intimates his belief that entire prohibition is against public sentiment, and he favor a per-mis-ion or license law of some form, which he says to be effective, must be iu harmony with public sentiment. Rut this principle has in a great degree been overlooked or di-re-garded in our legislation on the subject of temperance, and the result has been, and is that, for want of proper ral support from the public generally, the laws cannot be or wiil uot be enforced, whichever of these may be the fa the practical result is the same.
